Family Devastated After Tragic Superyacht Sinking Claims the Life of Tech Tycoon Mike Lynch and Daughter

The Lynch family has released a statement expressing their devastation and shock following the tragic superyacht sinking that claimed the life of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, 59, and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah. The family is being comforted and supported by loved ones during this difficult time.

Divers recovered the final missing body from the wreckage on Friday, believed to be that of Hannah. Her mother, Angela Bacares, survived the disaster. In a statement, the family expressed their gratitude to the Italian coastguard, emergency services, and all those involved in the rescue. They also requested privacy as they cope with their unspeakable grief.

Tributes have poured in for both members of the family, with friends and colleagues remembering Hannah as a bright and passionate student. British mother and baby survived the sinking.

Andrew Kanter, a close friend and former colleague of Mr. Lynch, described him as “the most brilliant mind and caring person I have ever known.” He also said that there is no other UK technology entrepreneur who has had such a widespread impact. Sushovan Hussain, a school friend and former colleague of Mr. Lynch, also knew the other victims on the yacht and expressed his shock and sadness at the loss of his friend.

Ruth Leigh, a neighbor of the Lynch family for 15 years, described them as “fantastic neighbors” and said that Mr. Lynch was always friendly and down-to-earth despite his success. She also noted his generosity and moral character, saying that his death is a great loss.

Mr. Lynch’s former colleague and friend David Tabizel co-founded Autonomy with him and described him as a “remarkable individual” and the “brightest man” he has ever met. He added that Mr. Lynch was beloved by those who knew him and should be celebrated as a hero.

David Yelland, Mr. Lynch’s former PR adviser, also paid tribute to him and called his death a tragic loss. He noted that Mr. Lynch was failed by his country and peers during his legal troubles and still suffered an unfair and brutal fate. He also described Mr. Lynch as a dreamer and visionary who had plans to contribute more to the UK.

Lord Browne, former chief executive of BP and chairman of BeyondNetZero, said that Mr. Lynch was a catalyst for deep tech entrepreneurs in the UK and that his contributions to science and technology will be greatly missed.

Sky’s Ian King, who knew Mr. Lynch personally, described him as a visionary and original thinker with a passion for building businesses. The Royal Academy of Engineering, where Mr. Lynch was a former council member, donor, and mentor, expressed their deep sadness at his passing and offered condolences to his family.

A spokesperson for technology industry group TechUK also paid tribute to Mr. Lynch, calling him a “pioneering figure” in the UK technology sector. Mr. Lynch’s Autonomy software was based on Bayesian statistical inference, which also inspired the name of the family’s ill-fated yacht. His contributions to the industry and success with Autonomy earned him the nickname “British Bill Gates.” His Cambridge thesis is also highly regarded and widely read.

There was a public outcry when the Home Secretary approved an extradition order for Mr. Lynch to face trial in the US. However, his contribution to the UK tech industry and his impact on those who knew him will not be forgotten.
