Green, a leading Swiss data center provider, has announced the start of construction on its fourth data center located on the Metro-Campus Zurich West. This new data center, with a total space of 5,526 m2, will provide secure and energy-efficient high-performance computing capabilities. It is expected to be commissioned by 2026 and will feature waste heat extraction to supply climate-neutral heating to the region.

According to Green’s CEO Roger Süess, the demand for modern data centers is on the rise due to the increasing need for computing power, especially with the advancements in technologies such as artificial intelligence and the push for digitalization in various industries. Many companies are also outsourcing their data centers, leading to the need for more efficient and flexible data center solutions.

Süess stated, “We are on the cusp of another wave of investment. With our investment program, we are once again doubling our data center capacities over the next two to three years. Modern and efficient data centers are crucial if companies want to be able to realistically implement a sustainable and future-proof digitalization.”

The company is focused on creating data centers that are not only energy-efficient but also equipped to meet the future demands of high-performance computing. The Data Center Zurich West 4 will feature waste heat extraction, with the waste heat from customer systems being fed into the new “Naturenergie Eigenamt” heating network. This network is run by IBB Energie AG and will provide climate-neutral heating to the region. Additionally, the data center will use natural cooling (freecooling) from the ambient air to minimize energy consumption. The design, facilities, and controls of the data center are in line with Green’s latest energy-saving reference architecture, and photovoltaic systems will complement the concept.

With its commissioning in 2026, the data center will also offer 2,000 m2 of office space and operate on 100% renewable energy. Switzerland, being an established location for business and science, is expected to focus more on digital innovation in the future. This makes it an attractive location for data centers, and Green is already considering new locations for its next phase of expansion.
