Martina Hefter Wins 20th German Book Prize for Novel “Hey guten Morgen, wie geht es dir?”

Frankfurt, Germany – Martina Hefter has been announced as the winner of the 20th German Book Prize for her novel “Hey guten Morgen, wie geht es dir?” (Klett-Cotta).

The prestigious award, presented annually by the Stiftung Buchkultur und Leseförderung des Börsenvereins des Deutschen Buchhandels (Foundation for Book Culture and the Promotion of Reading of the German Publishers and Booksellers Association), recognizes the best German-language novel of the year.

In a statement from the jury, they praised Hefter’s novel for its exploration of trust and deception in the digital age, as well as its unique blend of everyday life and mythical elements. They described the novel as “intelligently choreographed” and “fascinating.”

The jury for the German Book Prize 2024 includes Natascha Freundel (rbb), Gerrit Bartels (Der Tagesspiegel), Magda Birkmann (independent literary mediator and bookseller), Torsten Hoffmann (University of Stuttgart), Marianna Lieder (independent critic), Regina Moths (“Literatur Moths” bookshop), and Klaus Nüchtern (Falter magazine).

Hefter’s novel was chosen from a shortlist of five other titles, including Maren Kames’ “Hasenprosa,” Clemens Meyer’s “Die Projektoren,” Ronya Othmann’s “Vierundsiebzig,” Markus Thielemann’s “Von Norden rollt ein Donner,” and Iris Wolff’s “Lichtungen.”

The main sponsor of the German Book Prize is Deutsche Bank Stiftung (Deutsche Bank Foundation), with additional support from Frankfurter Buchmesse and the city of Frankfurt am Main. The television network Deutsche Welle also supports the prize in its media activities both at home and abroad.

A press photo of Martina Hefter will be available at approximately 8:30 p.m. at www.boersenverein.de/pressefotos.
