Art of the Motherland proudly presents “Resonance,” the debut solo exhibition of rising Ghanaian artist Isaac Ako Sowa. This online exhibition will be available to audiences worldwide from 17 February to 13 April 2025, offering a journey into the cultural, historical, and symbolic layers of Sowa’s artistic vision.
Inspired by the insightful speech delivered by His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, King of the Ashanti Kingdom, at the British Museum on 19th July 2024, the exhibition explores themes of identity, heritage, and the enduring importance of Ashanti artefacts, many of which were taken during colonial conflicts.
For the Ashanti people, these artefacts are powerful symbols of resilience and sovereignty. In his speech, Otumfuo emphasised their cultural significance and their role in fostering greater understanding between cultures. Sowa’s exhibition takes this message forward, bringing these themes to life through his art.
In “Resonance,” Sowa not only celebrates the preservation of these invaluable artefacts but also engages with the wider conversations they inspire about repatriation, cultural stewardship, and the ongoing connection between the past and the present. This virtual exhibition offers audiences around the world an opportunity to reflect on the rich heritage of the Ashanti Kingdom and the vital discussions these artefacts evoke.
