London, 25th October 2024: The latest Care Quality Commission (CQC) State of Care report has revealed concerning findings about the state of the UK healthcare system. The report highlights deepening inequalities, critical safety concerns, and unacceptable waiting times across all services. These issues are impacting the most vulnerable members of society, further exacerbating existing health inequalities.

The report reveals alarming statistics, including the fact that children in the most deprived areas are twice as likely to experience tooth decay, people in the most deprived areas are three times more likely to need emergency hospital treatment, and black people are over three and a half times more likely to be detained under the Mental Health Act. In addition, the report found that almost half of maternity units inspected were rated as ‘requires improvement’ or ‘inadequate’, and people with learning disabilities and autism are facing long waiting times for assessment and treatment.

These findings are not just numbers, but represent real suffering that could be prevented. While reform within the NHS is necessary, it is important to recognize that health inequalities are deeply rooted in issues such as poverty, housing, education, and employment.

The crisis extends across all healthcare settings, with diagnostic waiting lists increasing by 52% since 2019, and cancer waiting time standards consistently being missed. Mental health patients are also facing long waits for treatment, and social care delays are leaving thousands of people stranded in hospitals each day.

In response to these concerning findings, the Patients Association is calling on the government to launch an urgent cross-department action plan. This plan should address issues such as poverty, the rural-urban healthcare divide, equal access to dental care for children, discrimination and racism in health services, and proper support for all carers, particularly those from ethnic minority communities.

The Patients Association is an independent patient charity that campaigns for improvements in health and social care for patients. They believe that patients should be actively involved in decisions made about their care and in the design of the health and care system. Through their helpline and information services, they provide support to thousands of individuals each year, helping them navigate the complex health and social care system.

The CQC State of Care report highlights the urgent need for action to address these systemic failures and ensure that all patients, regardless of their background, have access to high-quality and timely healthcare. It is crucial that the government takes swift and comprehensive action to address these issues before they become even more deeply embedded in our society.
