“World Summit on Nature Addresses Ways to Protect the Planet, German Environmental Award Presented in Mainz”

Osnabrück, Germany- As the World Summit on Nature takes place in Cali, Colombia and the World Climate Conference approaches in Baku, Azerbaijan, leaders and experts are gathering to discuss solutions for better protecting the planet. In Mainz today, two individuals are being recognized for their practical approaches to addressing environmental challenges. Peatland researcher Dr. Franziska Tanneberger and electrical engineer Thomas Speidel will receive the German Environmental Award, presented by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt, DBU) at the Rheingoldhalle. The prestigious award, which comes with a prize of 500,000 euros, will be presented by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

The DBU Secretary-General Alexander Bonde commends both Tanneberger and Speidel as “real practical pioneers” and highlights their contributions to finding tangible solutions. Tanneberger has demonstrated through her work with farmers that peatland protection and utilization are not mutually exclusive, and that sustainable use of wet peatlands is possible. Speidel, on the other hand, has shown innovative thinking and strategic foresight in the field of electrical engineering, particularly in the area of electromobility.

The DBU Board of Trustees Chairman Prof Dr Kai Niebert emphasizes the importance of recognizing and seizing opportunities for change, stating “We must not give in to the pressing problems. Franziska Tanneberger and Thomas Speidel remind us of this through their inspiring work. It is crucial that we acknowledge and utilize opportunities for positive environmental change.” Niebert also notes that this year’s German Environmental Award sends a message of hope and confidence, as both natural climate protection and electromobility have the potential to bring about transformative change.

The DBU Secretary-General Bonde echoes this sentiment, highlighting the courage and determination of Tanneberger and Speidel in breaking new ground and inspiring others to do the same. In the face of global crises and conflicts, it is important to remain steadfast in our efforts to preserve the planet.
