Mainz, Germany – On Sunday, October 27, 2024, two individuals were honored with the prestigious German Environmental Award at the Rheingoldhalle in Mainz. Peatland researcher Dr. Franziska Tanneberger and electrical engineer Thomas Speidel were recognized for their groundbreaking work in finding practical solutions to protect the planet. The award, presented by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, is one of the most highly endowed environmental awards in Europe, with a total prize of 500,000 euros.

The World Summit on Nature in Cali, Colombia and the upcoming World Climate Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan have sparked a global conversation on ways to better protect the planet. However, in Mainz, Tanneberger and Speidel are demonstrating tangible solutions that can make a difference.

DBU Secretary-General Alexander Bonde praised the winners as “real practical pioneers” for their innovative and strategic work. Tanneberger, who is known to attend meetings with farmers in rubber boots, has shown that peatland protection and utilization are not contradictory and that sustainable use of wet peatlands is possible. Speidel, on the other hand, has exhibited great innovation and economic daring in his work as an electrical engineer.

DBU Board of Trustees Chairman Prof. Dr. Kai Niebert emphasized the importance of recognizing and seizing opportunities for change, stating that “we must not capitulate to the acute problems.” He also noted that this year’s award sends a message of confidence, as both natural climate protection and electromobility have the technologies, skills, and knowledge to inspire ecological change.

Bonde added that Tanneberger and Speidel are individuals who dare to break new ground and encourage others to do the same. Despite the many wars and crises facing the world, it is important to continue working towards preserving the planet.
