Cambridge – Quartix Ltd, a leading provider of vehicle tracking and telematics solutions, has released data revealing the UK’s top roads for speeding violations. The information was collected and analyzed from the company’s extensive SafeSpeed database, with the results showing that the M6 Toll near Birmingham and the M61 are the most frequent locations for speeding.

The SafeSpeed database is a powerful tool that tracks the speed of thousands of drivers every day. It is used to generate individual driver scores within Quartix’s fleet tracking system, which is utilized by over 35,000 businesses worldwide. These driver scores not only assess a vehicle’s speed in relation to the designated speed limit, but also compare it to the average speed of other vehicles on the same road. This Relative Speed Score takes into account the context of the road, which is particularly important for rural roads where driving at the speed limit may not be safe. Quartix customers can leverage this data to gain a comprehensive understanding of their fleet’s driving performance.

With over 663 million data points in the SafeSpeed database, Quartix has been able to identify the roads with the highest prevalence of speeding and identify potential risk zones for road users. For example, out of more than 7,000 data points collected on the M6, 46% of vehicles were found to be exceeding the 70mph speed limit between junctions T6 and T5. Similarly, on the M61 near junction 6, 40% of vehicles were found to be traveling above the 70mph limit out of over 16,000 data points collected.

Mark Cartwright, Head of Commercial Vehicle Incident Prevention at National Highways, acknowledges the importance of proactive safety management for mobile teams and praises Quartix’s SafeSpeed feature: “I think the kind of rich data that businesses can pull from systems such as Quartix is invaluable. We know that speed is a significant cause of collisions and certainly makes them more serious.”

For business owners who manage fleet vehicles, understanding these trends in high-risk driving behaviors is crucial. By utilizing insights from the SafeSpeed database, they can implement targeted training for their drivers, optimize safety measures, and ultimately reduce fleet costs by minimizing the risk of accidents, fines, and vehicle wear and tear.

Quartix’s SafeSpeed database offers a strategic advantage, empowering fleet operators to mitigate risks associated with high-speed driving and ensuring the safety of their drivers and vehicles.
