Milan/Baku, 20 November 2024 – A recent study conducted by the Fondazione MAIRE – ETS, in collaboration with international market research company IPSOS, has revealed that countries with fossil-based economies, such as Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, are increasingly recognizing the importance of the energy transition.

The study, titled “Climate goals: winning the challenge of climate goals through the creation of skills and competences worldwide. Addendum 1: focus Azerbaijan – Kazakhstan”, was launched during COP29 in Baku and covers 12 countries on 4 continents, with a total of over 2,000 highly educated individuals and opinion leaders interviewed.

According to the study, awareness of the energy transition and its potential benefits for the environment, economy, and society is on the rise. In Azerbaijan, 55% of respondents consider the energy transition a priority, while in Kazakhstan, 39% share the same view. This indicates a growing awareness of environmental issues and the potential economic opportunities they offer in these countries.

The study also reveals that training and professional development in the field of energy transition are crucial issues in both Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, with over 80% of those interviewed recognizing their need for additional training in this area. This is higher than other countries with fossil-based economies, such as India (71%), the USA, and Saudi Arabia (75%).

In terms of necessary skills, the study found that problem-solving abilities are a priority in Azerbaijan, as the energy transition presents several challenges that require innovative solutions. In Kazakhstan, critical thinking skills are considered essential for analyzing complex data, evaluating alternative approaches, and making informed decisions.

Fabrizio Di Amato, Chairman of Fondazione MAIRE and MAIRE Group, commented on the study’s findings, stating: “The results of this study demonstrate that the energy transition is possible in every country, by adopting a gradual approach. All available technological solutions can contribute to the energy transition, including decarbonized gas. I hope that our Foundation’s commitment will help accelerate the adoption of public policies to implement training programs for the essential skills needed to support this paradigm shift.”

The study was sponsored by MAIRE’s subsidiaries NEXTCHEM and TECNIMONT and aims to promote the development of skills and competencies for the energy transition, which is crucial for achieving global climate goals.

Fondazione MAIRE – ETS is the corporate foundation of MAIRE Group and focuses on fostering the training of “humanist engineers” who can apply their multidisciplinary knowledge to contribute to the energy transition. The foundation also carries out projects to combat educational poverty and promote equitable access to educational opportunities for marginalized communities. In addition, Fondazione MAIRE – ETS manages the historical archives of MAIRE Group, preserving and promoting awareness of the company’s Italian engineering and architectural projects.
