Children’s Health Scotland Launches New Book to Help Children Prepare for Medical Procedures

Glasgow, Scotland – Children’s Health Scotland is proud to announce the release of a new book, “Sandy Meets the Teddy Hospital,” to help children prepare for medical procedures. The book, written by five-year-old Sandy, shares his personal experience and helpful techniques for coping with the anxiety of getting blood taken.

“I was really nervous before my first blood test, but then I learned some great ways to relax and get ready for the procedure,” Sandy said. “I wanted to share everything I learned in a book to help other children like me.”

The book is being released today, Tuesday 10 December 2024, in honor of Human Rights Day. It features sections for both young readers and parents, carers, or health professionals, with tips on how to help children cope with new experiences. The book also highlights children’s rights and the importance of engaging in health-related play for their healthy development.

Helen Forrest, Chief Executive of Children’s Health Scotland, expressed gratitude to Sandy and his parents for their contribution to creating this valuable resource. She also thanked the Health Play Team at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, particularly Melody, for their collaboration in crafting the book.

“Our Health Rights Service actively engages with children and young people to uphold their right to the best possible health, and Sandy has now emerged as one of our remarkable young Health Rights Defenders,” Forrest said.

Michelle Wilson, Head of Children and Young People Services at Children’s Health Scotland, also extended thanks to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and The Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity for their support in producing the book. The Teddy Hospital, where Sandy learns about his health rights and engages in health-related play, is fully funded by these organizations.

The book, along with other resources, is available for purchase on Children’s Health Scotland’s online store at https://www.childrenshealthscotland.org/how-you-can-help/shop/sandy-meets-the-teddy-hospital/.
