Amidst a world often characterised by detachment and challenges, Dr Salman Shahid and his team shine as a testament to compassion and dedication to community welfare.

The journey began during the COVID-19 pandemic when Dr Shahid, a Middleton-based GP, visited homes to deliver Christmas hampers to vulnerable individuals, the elderly, and those who had lost loved ones. This heartfelt gesture earned widespread national recognition on social media, including by the BBC.

Motivated by the impact of his efforts, Dr Shahid founded Healing Humanity International, a charity that supports the elderly, lonely, and isolated, as well as low-income families. The charity also works closely with food banks to aid the homeless and address the growing issue of poverty.

Since 2022, the organisation has hosted annual Christmas lunches for people facing loneliness, isolation, and disabilities. By harnessing community resources, these events have become more than just meals—they are gatherings that foster connection and a sense of belonging.

This year, Dr Shahid, with the help of team lead Jackie McCann, led a group of volunteers who worked tirelessly to prepare and serve nutritious meals. The lunches were carefully planned to cultivate a welcoming environment where attendees could connect, share stories, and experience companionship. These events have left participants feeling uplifted and supported.

Beyond the festive season, Dr Shahid’s commitment continues. His collaboration with the Middleton and Rochdale food banks ensures vital aid for homeless and food-insecure individuals. Through continuous food drives and fundraising activities, he has built a robust support system, turning seasonal acts of kindness into a year-round initiative.

Dr Shahid is a highly respected figure in the Middleton community, inspiring countless volunteers and donors through his leadership. His efforts have not only addressed pressing issues faced by vulnerable populations but also highlighted the critical need for communal mental health and emotional support.

Attendees of the Christmas lunches have shared how these gatherings have helped them overcome feelings of isolation and loss, enabling them to build new friendships and support networks during difficult times.

As this tradition grows, Dr Shahid and his team remain dedicated to cultivating connection and care. His work exemplifies the power of community and the difference that compassion can make, standing as a true pillar of hope in Middleton.
