Bravura, a leading African mining group and sister entity of AITEO, Africa’s largest indigenous oil and gas producer, has announced plans to build a large-scale lithium processing plant in Germany by 2027. The final location for the plant, which will produce lithium hydroxide, a key component in batteries for electric vehicles, will be determined in early 2025. Bravura is currently in talks with German automotive OEMs and suppliers for offtake agreements.
The subsidiary of Bravura Group responsible for the project is currently in the process of identifying a suitable location for the plant, which is expected to begin production in 2027. The company is also in discussions with German automotive OEMs and suppliers for offtake agreements.
The planning for the lithium processing plant is being conducted by Dorfner Anzaplan in Germany, and the raw materials will be sourced from Bravura’s various lithium assets across Africa. The company will transport the spodumene concentrate, a key source of lithium, directly to Germany and process it into lithium hydroxide. This will be done through Bravura’s own fleet of modern bulk carriers, making it the first company in Germany to provide lithium hydroxide directly to German OEMs and suppliers without any third-party involvement. This supports the goals of the European Critical Raw Materials Act, which mandates that 40% of lithium processing be conducted within the EU from 2030 onward.
Lithium hydroxide is a crucial raw material for the production of batteries in electric cars, with 1,000 tons of lithium hydroxide producing approximately 25,000 batteries. Currently, German automotive OEMs and battery manufacturers source 95% of their lithium hydroxide from China due to a lack of local supply. However, the EU has determined that by 2030, 40% of lithium processing must be done within the EU, making this project a key contributor to achieving this goal.
Bravura will be introducing its project in more detail during the BDI Raw Materials Congress on November 11, 2024, in Berlin, Germany. The company will also be contributing to the discussion about the future of raw material supply in Germany with top political and industrial stakeholders.
Bravura is a leading African vertically integrated international mineral resource conglomerate with affiliates and subsidiaries in various African countries. The company is part of the Peters Family Group, one of the largest Pan-African conglomerates with interests in the energy, mining, health services, real estate, and agriculture sectors. Bravura’s sister entity, AITEO, is the largest indigenous oil and gas producer on the African continent.
