HAIKOU, HAINAN, CHINA – The three-day 2024 Agarwood & Rosewood International Conference concluded on December 1 at the scenic Hainan International Exhibition Center’s Hall 5. With over 56,000 visitors and a total transaction value of 537 million RMB, the event was a resounding success, showcasing the best of the “fragrance and wood” industry and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Hainan.
The conference, which was held from November 29 to December 1, welcomed international buyers from countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Malaysia, who explored collaboration opportunities with domestic and foreign enterprises. Contracts worth 2.5 billion RMB were signed during the event, solidifying Hainan’s place as a global hub for agarwood and rosewood.
Hainan, with its tropical maritime climate and fertile soil, is renowned for producing some of the world’s finest agarwood and rosewood. The conference, which was held in Hall 5 of the Hainan International Exhibition Center, was a perfect blend of the natural beauty of the tropics and the charm of a cultural and industrial gathering.
The three-day event was a journey of fragrance and elegance, celebrating the new era of agarwood and rosewood. These natural treasures have been treasured by the Chinese for centuries, and the conference showcased their profound legacy and the artistry of nature. During the opening ceremony, representatives from various nations launched an initiative to establish the “Global Fragrance Industry Trade Alliance,” setting the stage for the future of the agarwood industry on a global scale.

The main forum and 12 sub-forums brought together leading scholars, cultural icons, and industry experts from around the world to discuss topics such as the cultural significance of agarwood and rosewood, genetic resource innovation, and future development trends.
According to the 2024 China Agarwood Industry Development Report released during the event, China now has over 1 million mu (about 66,667 hectares) of agarwood plantations, with 140,000 mu located in Hainan. These figures highlight the success of combining ecological preservation with economic growth, painting a promising picture for the industry’s future.
The conference also showcased the craftsmanship and heritage of agarwood and rosewood. The “Fragrance Competition” and “Fragrance Exploration Journey” offered visitors a deeper appreciation for the cultural and industrial value of these natural treasures. China’s first wild agarwood auction achieved a remarkable total transaction value of 76.38 million RMB, marking a milestone in the fusion of culture and commerce.
President of the Hainan Agarwood Association, Zeng Qingzhu, remarked, “This international conference has not only elevated Hainan agarwood onto the global stage but also provided innovative solutions for the fragrance industry worldwide.” Zeng has been instrumental in setting standards for the industry, including the CETTIC “Fragrance Master” certification, agarwood classification systems, and development plans.
The conference was jointly organized by the Hainan Daily Newspaper Group and the China Collectors Association, with co-hosting by the National Innovation Alliance for the Agarwood Industry of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration and the Hainan Folk Artists Association. The event was jointly undertaken by Hainan Daily Co., Ltd., Hainan Haiwang Industrial Co., Ltd., and Hainan Hailv Exhibition Service Co., Ltd. It successfully built international collaboration channels, further boosting the development of Hainan’s free trade port.
