BJ’s Wholesale is rolling out new offers for its members as grocery prices continue to put pressure on household budgets.

While the warehouse club revealed in its latest earnings report that its comparable club sales (excluding gasoline) rose 3.1% year over year in the second quarter of 2026, higher-income shoppers are driving much of that growth.

On an earnings call in August, BJ’s CEO Bob Eddy warned that the “K-shaped economy persists.”

“The vast majority of our growth continues to be driven by our higher-income members, which is consistent with what we’ve seen for some time now,” said Eddy. “In an environment where consumers remain discerning with their dollars, we know our job is to make sure we’re putting the right products at the right value in front of every member who walks through our doors.”

BJ’s cuts prices on select grocery items

As consumers respond to economic pressures, BJ’s has announced that it is offering members 42% off dozens of essential items, a move that celebrates its 42nd birthday, according to a recent press release.

BJ’s states that “the 42nd birthday event will provide unprecedented prices on select groceries, pantry staples, household essentials, health and beauty, apparel and more.”

The price cuts will impact items such as all fresh apples, 5-lb and 10-lb lean ground beef, all Kraft Mac & Cheese products, and Nautica Lightweight Puffer Vests for men, women, and kids.

The event officially kicked off on Sept. 24, and BJ’s members have until Oct. 31 to take advantage of these savings in stores or through the BJ’s mobile app and website.

“There’s no better way to thank our members for decades of loyalty and celebrate our ongoing commitment to unbeatable value than by offering even lower prices on products they rely on every day,”  said Tim Morningstar, executive vice president at BJ’s Wholesale Club, in the press release.

The move from BJ’s comes as it has doubled down on keeping prices low for members by using government tariff refunds. Meanwhile, the warehouse club has expanded its selection of higher-priced products to appeal to its rising base of affluent customers, a shift Eddy first discussed in May.

BJ’s faces pressure as grocery prices climb

The new offerings from BJ’s come as it operates in a tougher environment, with consumers nationwide shifting their buying habits in response to rising grocery prices.

According to recent Consumer Price Index data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, prices for goods and services increased 3.4% year over year in August.

Specifically, food at home prices rose 2.2%, with fruits and vegetables up 3.2%; cereals and bakery products up 2.6%; meats, poultry, fish, and eggs up 1.1%; and nonalcoholic beverages up 3.7%.

As grocery prices increase, an August survey by Algolia found that 75% of Americans are stressed about their grocery bills.

To save money while grocery shopping, 42% have switched to private-label brands, while 36% are buying cheaper alternatives of their favorite brands.

Also, 39% have purchased fewer nonessential food items, like snacks and treats, and 28% are comparing prices across multiple retailers to maximize value.

Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, said in a recent USA Today Network-Florida report that “American households are feeling the squeeze financially,” and many are shopping at lower-priced retailers to save money.

“It’s a challenging time,” said Long. “Clipping coupons helps, but it’s not enough. Inflation has wiped out all wage growth since April.”

“This is the longest period of financial squeeze since 2012 (excluding the worst of the pandemic),” she continued. “At Navy Federal Credit Union, we see more and more families shopping at discount and warehouse stores such as Costco, Sam’s Club and Aldi to stretch every dollar.”
