Updated 16 October 2026. Brent crude traded at $105.21 a barrel at 06:45 UTC on Friday 16 October (ICE front-month via Yahoo Finance), down from Thursday’s $105.92 settlement. The International Energy Agency (IEA) agreed on Thursday to release more than 20 million barrels of diesel from emergency stocks. US crude inventories fell 8.6 million barrels in a week. Verdict: the diesel release is small next to the Hormuz shortfall and barely moved crude. The draw and the strait keep the floor firm. Reference levels: $98 below, $110 above.

Key facts

  • Spot, 16 October: Brent $105.21 at 06:45 UTC (Yahoo Finance) and about $105.3-$105.4 on Trading Economics, down roughly 0.5 percent on the day. Reuters, via Business Recorder, had Brent at $105.51, down 41 cents, at 00:12 GMT. WTI was near $97.40 (OilPrice.com).
  • IEA diesel release: member countries agreed on 15 October to release more than 20 million barrels of diesel “as soon as possible.” They will also speed up delivery of the oil still owed from the record emergency release pledged in March. Reports put that remainder at between about 70 million barrels (Pomegra, which says roughly 330 million have been delivered) and 100 million barrels (Trading Economics, OilPrice.com).
  • Scale: 20 million barrels of diesel is less than one day of global diesel demand and just over five days of US consumption (Pomegra).
  • US inventories: crude stocks fell 8.6 million barrels in the week to 9 October, the largest draw since February. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve was unchanged near its record low (EIA data via Trading Economics).
  • Hormuz flows: oil moving through the strait averaged 11.62 million barrels a day in the week to 13 October, against a baseline of 17.15 million (Kpler, via OilPrice.com).
  • Shadow-fleet tankers: Washington is still only considering easing sanctions on some sanctioned tankers to bring down record freight rates. Nothing has been decided.

Why the diesel release barely moved Brent

The IEA aimed at the tightest part of the market. Diesel has been far scarcer than crude. The diesel crack spread, the margin refiners earn turning a barrel of crude into diesel, was $72.51 a barrel on 6 October against a 2021-2025 average of $31.50. US retail diesel stood at $6.32 a gallon, up more than 70 percent in a year (Pomegra).

A product release goes straight at that squeeze, so the first effect should show up in diesel futures and refining margins rather than in Brent. Front-month US diesel futures traded about 1 percent lower on Thursday at around $4.86 a gallon (Pomegra). Brent, by contrast, slipped only about 70 cents from Thursday’s settlement by early Friday.

The volume also matters. More than 20 million barrels sounds large, but the Hormuz shortfall in Kpler’s data is about 5.5 million barrels a day. At that rate the diesel release covers less than four days of missing strait flows. Analysts at Haitong Futures, quoted by Finimize, said the release will do little while shipping disruption around Yemen continues.

Why the floor holds

Three things keep Brent above $100. First, the US stock draw: 8.6 million barrels in a week is a large physical signal, and it came with the reserve near a record low, so Washington has less spare oil to release itself. Second, Hormuz. Iranian strikes on tankers continued this week, and flows are running about a third below normal (OilPrice.com, Kpler). Third, the risk premium. ING commodity strategists Warren Patterson and Ewa Manthey said the market is pricing a significant risk premium that would only fully unwind with some kind of agreement between the US and Iran.

ING also questioned the tanker plan. Many of the sanctioned vessels already trade, and EU sanctions on them stay in place, which could make them hard to insure. That limits how far the shadow-fleet idea can push prices down even if Washington approves it. We covered the plan in Thursday’s Brent outlook.

Brent price: bull, base and bear

Scenario Brent What has to happen Anchor
Bear $98 The diesel release and faster delivery of the March barrels ease product tightness, Washington approves the tanker easing, and Hormuz attacks slow. FXEmpire’s first Brent support at $98, about 7 percent below Friday’s spot. The 6 October low was $97.06.
Base $102-$108 The release is absorbed, US stocks keep drawing, and the strait stays disrupted but open. A band around this week’s Brent settlements of $105.69-$106.65 (Yahoo Finance).
Bull $110 Hormuz flows fall further, another large EIA draw lands next week, or the tanker plan stalls. FXEmpire’s first Brent resistance at $110, with $120 above it.

The bear case sits below Friday’s $105.21 spot. The levels are technical reference points, not price forecasts.

What to watch

  • Diesel futures and cracks: if the release is working, the diesel crack spread should narrow before Brent moves.
  • Release timing: how quickly IEA members actually deliver the diesel and the rest of the March barrels.
  • Next EIA report: a second large draw would confirm the market is tight beyond the Gulf.
  • Hormuz: weekly transit data from Kpler and any new strikes on tankers.
  • 27-28 October: the Fed decision. Energy drove the hot September inflation data (see our CPI report), and a hike would firm the dollar.

Quick take: the IEA went after diesel, the tightest part of the oil market, but its 20 million barrels is under four days of the Hormuz shortfall. Brent barely moved. An 8.6 million-barrel US stock draw and strait flows a third below normal keep it in a $102-$108 range. A real easing in the Gulf opens $98. Another big draw or a stalled tanker plan puts $110 back in play.

Oil is also driving the Fed debate that moves gold. See gold after the hot PPI and retail sales data.

FAQ

What is the Brent crude price today?

Brent traded at $105.21 a barrel at 06:45 UTC on Friday 16 October 2026 (ICE front-month via Yahoo Finance), down from a $105.92 settlement on Thursday. Trading Economics showed about $105.3-$105.4.

What did the IEA announce?

On 15 October IEA members agreed to release more than 20 million barrels of diesel from emergency stocks as soon as possible. They will also speed up delivery of the oil still owed from the emergency release agreed in March.

Why didn’t the diesel release push oil much lower?

It is small next to the supply gap. 20 million barrels is less than one day of global diesel demand, and Hormuz flows are running about 5.5 million barrels a day below baseline, according to Kpler. US crude stocks also fell 8.6 million barrels in the latest week.

How much oil is moving through the Strait of Hormuz?

About 11.62 million barrels a day in the week to 13 October, against a baseline of 17.15 million, according to Kpler data cited by OilPrice.com.

Has the US lifted sanctions on shadow-fleet tankers?

No. The administration is considering it to lower record freight rates, but nothing has been decided. ING noted that EU sanctions on the vessels would remain in place.

Could Brent fall below $100?

Yes, if the stock releases ease product tightness, the tanker plan goes ahead and attacks in the Gulf slow. Our bear case is $98, FXEmpire’s first support level.
