DSM Foundation announces their partnership with The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award as an Approved Activity Provider for the Skills section. The drug education charity’s Safer Choices program will be available for young people aged 13 and above as part of their Bronze or Silver DofE Award.

The Safer Choices program, created by the DSM Foundation in memory of 16-year-old Daniel Spargo-Mabbs, offers relevant, evidence-based information about drugs to help young people make safe choices for themselves and their peers. The Foundation has been working with young people for a decade, providing workshops and resources to schools and colleges.

Fiona Spargo-Mabbs OBE, director and founder of the DSM Foundation, expressed her excitement for the opportunity to reach more young people through this partnership. She stated, “We share a vision of enabling young people to build confidence in who they are, develop the skills they need to navigate life successfully, and manage the challenges that might come their way safely, and we’re proud to be part of their highly respected Award.”

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a highly respected program that challenges young people aged 14-24 to engage in activities that improve their physical and skills, volunteer for a cause, and complete a demanding expedition. Along the way, participants have fun, build resilience and self-belief, discover new talents, and learn practical skills for the future.

According to the DofE, there has been an increase in young people participating in the program, with half a million actively involved and more schools, community organizations, and prisons offering the DofE. The organization aims to have 1.6 million young people start their DofE by spring 2026 and has launched projects to fund schools and organizations in deprived areas to offer the program and support those with additional needs and disabilities. The DofE is also available in prisons and young offender institutions.

The Foundation’s goal is to provide young people with relevant and evidence-based information about drugs to make safe choices for themselves and their friends. They also offer workshops for parents and caregivers, as well as training for school and college staff. For more information, visit https://www.dsmfoundation.org.uk/.

The DofE is open to all young people aged 14-24, with participants creating their own programs to achieve a Bronze, Silver, or Gold DofE Award. In 2023-24, over 330,000 young people started their DofE, contributing over 4.7 million hours of volunteering in their communities. The organization aims to see 1.6 million young people start their DofE by spring 2026. For more information, visit DofE.org.
