The comfortable reading is that Western Digital fell because the fiscal first quarter was not good enough: that reading is wrong. Western Digital closed Thursday, 22 October 2026, at $354.19, down $24.32, or 6.43 percent, and the call on the beat was set for 4:30 p.m. Eastern, after that official close. Through 31 December 2026 the last 90 daily log-returns put a bull at $446.89, a base at $255.48 and a bear at $175.98. The base sits $98.71 under the close because the mean of those returns is negative.

The missing fact is the order of the tape: a 4:00 p.m. close cannot judge a 4:30 p.m. call. Dow Jones, timestamped 6:58 p.m. Eastern, then put the shares at $334.51 after the bell, down 5.6 percent. The distribution uses Thursday’s official close, not that print and not a partial Friday bar. The other skip is sequential GAAP profit, down 44 percent only because the Sandisk mark in the June quarter is gone, while operating income rose.

Key facts

  • Nasdaq official close, Thursday 22 October 2026: $354.19, down $24.32, or 6.43 percent, from $378.51. Open $363.76, high $367.34, low $348.23, volume 13,557,610. Nasdaq file downloaded 23 October 2026.
  • Same file: 20-day average $400.70, so the close is 11.61 percent under it. 50-day average $435.87, so the close is 18.74 percent under it. Prior five sessions, 15 to 21 October: low $331.81, high $381.88.
  • Exhibit 99.1, 22 October 2026: revenue $4,381 million, up 55 percent year over year and 17 percent sequentially. GAAP diluted earnings $4.63. Non-GAAP diluted earnings $4.64. Free cash flow $1,377 million. SEC exhibit.
  • Dow Jones via Morningstar, 6:58 p.m. Eastern on 22 October: FactSet expected $4.11 and $4.14 billion of revenue. After the bell, $334.51, down 5.6 percent. Morningstar.
  • Same exhibit, December-quarter outlook: revenue $5.1 billion, plus or minus $100 million, up 66 percent to 72 percent year over year. Non-GAAP gross margin 60 percent to 61 percent. Non-GAAP earnings $5.80, plus or minus $0.20. Kris Sennesael put the midpoint margin at 60.5 percent.
  • Dividend $0.175, up 17 percent, payable 17 December 2026 to holders of record on 4 December. Four quarters are $0.70, or 0.20 percent of $354.19. Dow Jones described the same yield.
  • MarketBeat, 22 October: 248 exabytes, up 22 percent. Cloud revenue $3.9 billion, 88 percent of sales. Price per terabyte up 28 percent. DRAM and NAND costs are rising. MarketBeat.
  • House path from $354.19, not a broker target: bull $446.89, base $255.48, bear $175.98. N is 48. Mean log-return -0.00680617. Sample standard deviation 0.05380558. Not the older $900 and $285, $725 and $290, or $1,050 and $415 pairs.

What just happened, and why the obvious reading is wrong

Western Digital reported fiscal first-quarter 2027 results for the period ended 2 October 2026. Revenue was $4,381 million, against $2,818 million a year earlier and $3,747 million in June. Non-GAAP operating income was $2,153 million, a 49.1 percent margin, up from $856 million. Non-GAAP diluted earnings were $4.64, against $1.78 a year earlier and $3.56 in June, and GAAP operating income rose from $1,563 million to $2,046 million.

Dow Jones said FactSet had been at $4.11 and $4.14 billion. The company beat both and raised the dividend 17 percent, to $0.175, and the exhibit prints no consensus, so this piece uses that FactSet pair. The session ended at $354.19, high $367.34, low $348.23, on 13,557,610 shares. Irving Tan, chief executive, said in the exhibit: “Fiscal 2027 is off to a strong start, with results exceeding expectations, driven by robust customer demand and disciplined execution.” The call was 4:30 p.m. Eastern, with the close already in.

At 6:58 p.m. Eastern, Dow Jones had the shares at $334.51 after the bell, $19.68 under the close and $2.70 above the 16 October low of $331.81. The wire tied the selling to a rotation out of AI-linked shares, fueled in part by Meta Platforms capital spending. Thursday gave $24.32 back from Wednesday’s $378.51 before the call. A beat inside a de-rating is not a guide cut.

The sequential GAAP line is the other false reading: diluted net income was $1,779 million, or $4.63, down 44 percent from $3,195 million, or $8.21, in June. June GAAP net income was $3,195 million and non-GAAP net income was $1,382 million. This quarter both are $1,779 million, so non-GAAP earnings rose from $3.56 to $4.64. The gap that closed was the gain on the retained Sandisk interest, zero this quarter, so the hard-drive result did not shrink.

Who is exposed

The exhibit names the risk as concentration in the cloud end market and among the top customers, and it does not name them. MarketBeat’s account puts cloud revenue at $3.9 billion, 88 percent of the quarter, up 54 percent year over year, client at $320 million, up 119 percent, and consumer at $193 million, up 19 percent. Those segment dollars are that outlet’s rounding against $4,381 million. Seven customers, on Tan’s account, are the visibility.

Irving Tan, chief executive, as posted by Fireside Alpha from the call: “I think in terms of visibility outlook, if you take our top seven customers as an example, we have good visibility up to 2030, 2031 across all seven of them.” Fireside Alpha published it at 9:47 p.m. GMT on 22 October. The seven names are still not public. A pause at one of them is most of the quarter.

Seagate is the other scaled hard-drive name on the tape. On 6 October this desk recorded Western Digital at $411.04, down 6.93 percent: Seagate and Western Digital, 6 October. Thursday’s $354.19 is $56.85 under that close, or 13.8 percent.

NAND and DRAM remain inside the drive. MarketBeat reported higher input costs for both, which is why this morning’s note stays up: Sandisk after the Western Digital print. Micron is the memory side of the same input: Micron’s bull, base and bear.

What the tape and the filing show

The chart is the Nasdaq official daily close, not an after-hours series. It runs from 22 October 2025, close $120.47 and low $117.23, through Thursday’s $354.19. The 18 June 2026 close was $746.23, and the intraday high that day was $799.87, the top of the 52-week range. Thursday is 55.72 percent under that high and 52.54 percent under the 18 June close, and about 194 percent above the close of 22 October 2025, and that giveback is the negative drift.

Nasdaq official daily closes for WDC through Thursday 22 October 2026. The top panel includes the daily lows. FinanceFeeds chart, 23 October 2026.

The close is $46.51 under the 20-day average of $400.70, or 11.61 percent, and $81.68 under the 50-day average of $435.87, or 18.74 percent. Against the prior five sessions it is $27.69 under the $381.88 high of 21 October, or 7.25 percent, and $22.38 above the $331.81 low of 16 October, or 6.74 percent.

Thursday’s low of $348.23 did not take out 16 October. The largest move in the 90 log-returns is 30 July, up 15.37 percent, from $462.04 to $533.04. One day does not own sigma. The negative mean is the path off 18 June.

Reading Figure What it is, and what it is not
Official close $354.19 on 22 October Nasdaq daily close. The formula spot.
After the bell $334.51 at 6:58 p.m. Eastern Dow Jones. Not the spot.
Non-GAAP earnings $4.64 versus FactSet $4.11 Exhibit, and Dow Jones for the expectation. A beat.
Revenue $4,381 million versus $4.14 billion Exhibit dollars. Dow Jones for FactSet. A beat.
December-quarter guide $5.1 billion, plus or minus $100 million. Earnings $5.80, plus or minus $0.20. Company outlook. Not this bull.
House bull, base, bear $446.89, $255.48, $175.98 48 sessions and the last 90 log-returns. Not $900, $725 or $1,050.

The $5.1 billion midpoint is 16.4 percent above $4,381 million. The low end of $5.0 billion is 14.1 percent above it and the high end of $5.2 billion is 18.7 percent above it. Sennesael’s 60.5 percent margin midpoint is 2.4 points above 58.1 percent. Expenses are guided at $400 million to $410 million, against $391 million non-GAAP, and the exhibit says a GAAP reconciliation of the December guide is not available without unreasonable effort.

What Western Digital said, and what it did not name

Kris Sennesael, chief financial officer, in the exhibit: “Our first quarter results demonstrate the continued momentum in our business, with robust exabyte growth and improved pricing driving another quarter of strong financial performance.” He then named the midpoint: revenue of $5.1 billion, non-GAAP gross margin of 60.5 percent, and non-GAAP earnings of $5.80. The band around earnings is $0.20, so $5.60 to $6.00. That is a company sentence, not a statement that Thursday’s multiple holds.

Tan, on a second Fireside Alpha post, put a floor under exabytes rather than under the share price: “We sort of see the current quarter as being sort of the floor in terms of exabyte growth, and we see that accelerating through the rest of the fiscal year, and obviously, as Kris highlighted in the script, to ’28 and beyond that as well.” The same post has the steps he named, from a 32-terabyte drive to 44 terabytes to 55. That status is the source, not a price target.

MarketBeat’s paraphrase adds the product path. The 40-terabyte ePMR line is expected near 30 percent of nearline in the December quarter and about 50 percent in March.

HAMR qualifications with two hyperscalers are expected in the first quarter of calendar 2027, with volume in the first half, and a second generation in the second half of 2027. Capex should average 4 percent to 6 percent of revenue over five years, for heads, media and automation. The seven customers were not named, and the board can cut the dividend or the buyback.

Cash going out, and the cost line

The tension is the cash-flow statement set against the margin guide. Cash ended at $1,314 million, down from $1,579 million. Operating cash flow was $1,604 million and free cash flow was $1,377 million.

Buybacks were $1,001 million. Employee plans were a $317 million outflow. Dividends paid were $56 million. Convertible-note settlement was $570 million.

Current debt fell from $1,052 million to $789 million. MarketBeat reported net cash of about $500 million. Other liabilities of $799 million are not split, so this desk does not recompute net cash.

Inventories rose from $1,511 million to $1,781 million and receivables from $2,026 million to $2,232 million. Business realignment charges were $43 million. That is not a liquidity crisis.

It is cash returned, and heads and media funded, while the close is 52.54 percent under 18 June. On a $5.1 billion quarter, 6 percent capex is about $306 million, next to the $227 million just spent. A $0.70 annual dividend is 0.20 percent of $354.19, not a floor under that close.

Bull, base, and bear

The title numbers are this distribution, not a broker target. The English pairs already printed are a $900 bull with a $285 bear, a $725 bull with a $290 bear, and a $1,050 bull with a $415 bear. A collision would need both new numbers within $1 of one of those pairs. The bull here is $446.89 and the bear is $175.98.

The spot is Thursday’s $354.19 official close. The last 90 daily log-returns run from 16 June through 22 October. Mu, the mean, is -0.00680617. Sigma, the sample standard deviation, is 0.05380558.

N is 48 because the last completed bar is Thursday and the horizon is 31 December 2026. October still has six sessions, 23 and 26 through 30. November has 20 weekdays once Thanksgiving on 26 November is out, and 27 November counts. December has 22 weekdays once Christmas on 25 December is out, and 24 December counts.

Six plus 20 plus 22 is 48. The square root of 48 is 6.92820323.

Base is the spot times e to the power of N times mu. The exponent is 48 times -0.00680617, or -0.32669616. On $354.19 that rounds to $255.48, down $98.71, or 27.87 percent.

Bull adds 1.5 times sigma times the square root of N. The exponent is -0.32669616 plus 1.5 times 0.05380558 times 6.92820323, or 0.232468. On $354.19 that rounds to $446.89, up $92.70, or 26.17 percent.

Bear subtracts one times sigma times the square root of N. The exponent is -0.699472. On $354.19 that rounds to $175.98, down $178.21, or 50.31 percent.

The bull stays above the spot, so the negative drift is kept. It is $46.19 above the 20-day average and $11.02 above the 50-day average. This is not financial advice.

Case Price Versus the $354.19 spot What has to be true
Bull $446.89 Up $92.70, or 26.17 percent The recent drift continues, and 31 December finishes 1.5 standard deviations above it. HAMR volume is a 2027 event.
Base $255.48 Down $98.71, or 27.87 percent Only the mean continues for 48 sessions. The path is the de-rating from $746.23 on 18 June.
Bear $175.98 Down $178.21, or 50.31 percent The same drift minus one standard deviation. The post-June pace has to persist.

A broker target is a different object. Pages with fresh targets after the print did not open cleanly, so no street dollar is imported. Earnings of $4.64 and a $5.80 guide are a run rate, not the exponent.

The base under the spot is not a typo. Mu is negative, and e to the power of -0.32669616 is about 0.721, so 0.721 times $354.19 is $255.48. Revenue can rise, as the guide says, while the multiple does what the path from $746.23 already did.

What happens next

Friday 23 October 2026 is the first session that can price the 4:30 p.m. call. A close under $354.19, and nearer $334.51 than Thursday’s $367.34 high, would accept the second leg. A close back through Wednesday’s $378.51 would say the after-bell print was the thin book. Neither changes $446.89 or $175.98 until a completed bar replaces Thursday, and a partial Friday trade is not this spot.

On 4 December 2026, the record date, the test is the 20-day average, not the $0.175 paid on 17 December. The close is $46.51 under $400.70. Still under that average, the negative drift is live and the dividend is not holding the multiple. Back above $400.70, the base mean is already stale, and under Thursday’s $348.23 low the de-rating is still the path.

On 31 December, N, the base of $255.48 is the mean continued. The bull of $446.89 adds 1.5 standard deviations and does not need HAMR to ship in 2026. The bear of $175.98 is one deviation under that drift, not a forecast that cloud demand vanishes. A close that gets back above the 50-day average of $435.87, which is $11.02 under the bull, and stays there would say the drift in this file has stopped.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the sessions through 31 December 2026 put a Western Digital bull and bear, from Thursday’s official close rather than the after-hours print?

The bull is $446.89 and the bear is $175.98, with a base of $255.48, from the $354.19 Nasdaq close on 22 October 2026. The after-bell print is not an input. The path uses 48 sessions, a mean log-return of -0.00680617 and a sample standard deviation of 0.05380558. The base is under the close because that mean is negative, and a partial Friday bar would be a different spot.

Did the fiscal first quarter miss?

No. The exhibit reports revenue of $4,381 million, up 55 percent, and non-GAAP earnings of $4.64. Dow Jones, citing FactSet, put the expectation at $4.11 a share and $4.14 billion of revenue, and the December-quarter outlook is revenue of $5.1 billion, plus or minus $100 million, and non-GAAP earnings of $5.80, plus or minus $0.20. The miss is not in the print: the argument is the multiple on a beat that arrived during a de-rating.

Why did the shares fall if the numbers were ahead of FactSet?

The regular session was already down 6.43 percent at 4:00 p.m. Eastern, and the call was at 4:30 p.m. Dow Jones tied the day’s selling to a rotation out of AI-linked shares, including Meta Platforms capital spending, and then reported Western Digital at $334.51 after the bell. MarketBeat adds a cost point the exhibit does not tabulate: DRAM and NAND inputs, and a cost-per-terabyte cut expected to miss a roughly 10 percent annual goal.

Are the bull and the bear Street targets?

No. The $446.89 bull, the $255.48 base and the $175.98 bear are the distribution above, not a broker target. They are also not the older pairs of $900 and $285, $725 and $290, or $1,050 and $415. A named analyst target is a separate number, and none is pasted into the title, because pages carrying a fresh target did not open cleanly.

What is the dividend worth against these prices?

The board declared $0.175 a share, up 17 percent, payable on 17 December 2026 to holders of record on 4 December. Four quarters are $0.70, or 0.20 percent of the $354.19 close. The exhibit says the board can reduce or discontinue the dividend. The yield does not close the $46.51 gap to the 20-day average, and it does not carry the shares to $446.89.

Who has to keep buying the drives for the guide to hold?

The company did not name them. Irving Tan said the top seven customers give visibility out to 2030 and 2031, in remarks posted by Fireside Alpha. MarketBeat reported cloud revenue of $3.9 billion, or 88 percent of the quarter. The exposure is that concentration, plus DRAM and NAND inside the drive, and a pause at one of the seven is most of the revenue line.
