Samsung’s AI glasses make a bold bet against Meta

One issue with smart glasses that cannot be resolved by specs alone is that users must really want to use them.

Samsung Electronics appears to be taking that problem seriously as it prepares to enter a market already dominated by Meta Platforms (META).

A new leak gives the clearest look yet at Samsung’s upcoming artificial intelligence-powered glasses, including a reported weight of roughly 41 grams, a 12-megapixel camera capable of recording 3K video, and as much as nine hours of battery life. The glasses are expected to use Google’s Gemini assistant and arrive in a wide range of designs from eyewear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker.

Samsung has not verified all of the characteristics that T3 reported, and the price is still unclear.

The larger plan, however, is hardly a secret.

Samsung and Google have already shown the eyewear publicly and said the devices are designed to combine hands-free computing with frames comfortable enough for everyday use.

As a result, Samsung enters one of Meta’s most promising new hardware marketplaces and must answer a question that might decide the outcome: Can smart glasses become regular glasses first, followed by technology?

Samsung takes aim at Meta’s biggest advantage

Meta has previously shown that customers will purchase well-known eyeglasses when they include AI elements.

In 2025, Meta’s smart glasses sold about 7 million units and accounted for 76% of the worldwide market, according to Reuters.

As a result, rather than establishing the category, Samsung enters as a competitor.

There seems to be a greater range of options in its response. T3 reports that Gentle Monster could offer six frame shapes across 16 versions, while Warby Parker is expected to have three styles across 10 versions.

The leaked hardware reportedly weighs about 41 grams with standard lenses, and the weight is more important than it would seem.

Wearing smart glasses for extended periods of time is intended. If users find a gadget too heavy to wear all day, even one with impressive artificial intelligence functions will be less helpful.

Samsung has emphasized that point itself. In a company statement, it described the upcoming eyewear as combining a lightweight frame and slim profile with the comfort needed for daily wear.

T3 claims to have four microphones, open-ear speakers, a Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 CPU, two gigabytes of RAM, and 64 gigabytes of storage. According to reports, the 12-megapixel camera can capture 3K video at 30 frames per second.

Nine hours is the maximum battery life, and a charging case may provide up to 72 hours of extra juice.

Those figures put Samsung surprisingly close to Meta’s latest product.

Meta says its Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 also carries a 12-megapixel camera, records 3K video, and runs for as long as nine hours.

This suggests that Samsung may not be attempting to win with a single, dominant standard. It’s attempting to compete on all fronts, including fashion, hardware, and Gemini.

Google gives Samsung a different artificial intelligence weapon

Samsung also has something Meta does not: Gemini.

The software framework that powers the glasses, Android XR, was developed by Alphabet’s (GOOGL) Google in collaboration with Samsung and Qualcomm.

Google claims that its first audio glasses would let users to snap pictures, send messages, ask Gemini questions, and obtain directions without taking out a phone.

The competitive fight is altered by these developments.

Meta is in charge of both its AI helper and the hardware experience. Samsung, on the other hand, can rely on Google’s Gemini while concentrating more on its Galaxy ecosystem and hardware.

Additionally, Google claims that compatible Wear OS watches will be able to operate the glasses using hand gestures, creating an additional link between the eyewear and items that customers already possess.

That ecosystem could be just as important to Samsung as the camera.

Building connectivity across Galaxy phones, watches, earphones, and other products has taken years. Another method of keeping people within that system without requiring them to look at a traditional screen is using smart glasses.

Additionally, there can be a larger reward.

Businesses using artificial intelligence are becoming more and more interested in assistants that can comprehend what a person is seeing and hearing in real time. Since glasses are in the user’s field of vision for hours, they provide an ideal location for such technology.

This opportunity has also raised concerns about privacy.

Smart glasses capable of discreetly recording people have attracted increasing regulatory scrutiny and bans in some workplaces and public venues. Reuters reported in September that privacy concerns had intensified as adoption increased.

Samsung will have to confront the same problem if its glasses reach a mass audience. Still, the leaked specifications suggest it understands the more immediate challenge.

Consumers will not wear artificial intelligence glasses all day simply because the artificial intelligence is impressive. The product also has to feel like something they would have worn anyway.

Meta got there first.

Samsung is betting on lighter frames and more styles, and Gemini can help it catch up.
