Micron stock flashes bargain pricing signal with costly catch

Imagine opening a brokerage account and looking at what three consecutive years of AI euphoria had done to one chip stock.

A $10,000 investment in Micron Technology (MU) at its Nov. 6, 2023, adjusted closing price of $72.92 would have been worth $90,015 at the Nov. 5, 2026, adjusted close of $656.39.

That’s enough to make shareholders laugh all the way to the bank, even after Micron dropped 17.5% in value in a single session just this week.

The twist, though, is that as chip stocks sold off, Micron traded at the lowest forward multiple in Seeking Alpha’s semiconductor-related screen. Though the bargain is incredibly enticing for a company benefiting from surging AI demand, memory-chip profits depend heavily on prices that can swing sharply.

Before calling Micron cheap, investors need to ask what happens when today’s extraordinary earnings stop being extraordinary.

Micron stock flashes unusual valuation signal after chip sell-off

The semiconductor stock selloff turned brutal on Nov. 5.

Micron Technology stock, in particular, sank 17.46% to $656.39 as investors questioned whether the AI data-center spending boom could continue at its pace, Yahoo Finance reported. Another big worry surfaced that morning when Bloomberg reported a labor dispute had stalled work on Micron’s planned $4.5 billion Taiwan factory.

The sell-off produced a startling valuation; Seeking Alpha ranked Micron first in its selected chip-related stock screen, with a forward price-to-earnings ratio of just 3.72. That compares with 12.78 at Micron’s fiscal 2024 year-end, 10.15 a year later, and 6.64 at fiscal 2026 year-end. Interestingly, the multiple dropped about 63% from its 2025 level.

For a company growing this quickly, that sounds tempting.

Micron reported record fiscal Q4 sales of $54.23 billion, nearly five times the year-earlier figure, alongside adjusted earnings of $33.42 per share. Full-year sales surged 256% to $133.19 billion.

Management expects $61.5 billion in revenue, give or take $1.5 billion, in the current quarter, with adjusted earnings of about $38.15 per share, leaving CEO Sanjay Mehrotra ecstatic about what’s to come.

“Micron delivered record fiscal 2026 results, and we expect an even stronger fiscal 2027,” Mehrotra said on Sept. 30.

AI servers need enormous amounts of memory, and supply hasn’t kept pace.

There’s a catch, however. Micron trades at 5.58 times trailing sales, up from 3.65 at fiscal 2025 year-end. That’s roughly 53% more expensive on sales, even as its earnings multiple collapses. The bargain depends heavily on today’s exceptional profits lasting.

Why Micron’s soaring profits come with a costly catch

The big caveat with Micron’s apparent bargain-looking valuation begins with memory prices.

Micron’s annual report shows DRAM average selling prices jumped roughly 180% in fiscal 2026, while NAND prices rose about 200%, as reported by BigGo Finance. Gross margin surged from 40% to 81%. Profits soared not just because Micron sold more chips, but because customers paid far more for them.

Consequently, TrendForce warned that rising component costs were squeezing notebook manufacturers. One model suggested that memory inflation alone might push a $900 laptop’s retail price up more than 30%, assuming manufacturers maintained margins.

That said, Morningstar analyst William Kerwin called it “a tremendous cycle, but a cycle nonetheless.” He expects memory prices to peak around early 2028, followed by a downturn as new factories add supply.

As a result, Morningstar lowered its Micron fair-value estimate to $700 from $850.

In essence, high prices encourage chipmakers to expand capacity, while device makers might bump prices, cut specifications, or absorb lower margins. If new supply outpaces demand, memory prices and Micron’s tremendous profits might retreat together.

The earnings making Micron stock look cheap today might not last.

What Micron’s low valuation means for stock investors

At 3.72 times expected earnings, Micron looks cheap. But naturally that number rests on a profit forecast.

Here’s the math. If projected earnings dropped 50% and Micron’s share price stayed unchanged, its forward P/E would jump to 7.44. A 75% earnings drop would push it to 14.88.

There are reasons this cycle might last longer. Micron says 26 strategic customer agreements cover more than 35% of revenue through 2030, backed by $32 billion in customer commitments, mainly deposits.

More than 75% of anticipated 2027 output is committed.

CEO Sanjay Mehrotra captured the industry’s tight supply picture on Sept. 30, saying, “We do not have a line of sight to when supply and demand will get in balance.”

That said, investors will be looking at Micron’s next results, expected Dec. 16, against its $61.5 billion sales forecast and 86.25% adjusted gross margin outlook. DRAM and NAND pricing, capacity spending, and customer commitments matter a lot more than a headline multiple.

If pricing holds, the stock may be inexpensive. If profits fade, the bargain could vanish.
