Juneteenth has become a significant date on the American calendar, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States and marking the nation’s newest federal holiday.

As Americans prepare for the holiday, investors may be wondering whether Wall Street will be operating on its normal schedule or taking a pause along with many government offices and banks.

The answer is that both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are closed on June 19 in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day.

The Nasdaq is also closed for the holiday, giving many financial professionals a three-day weekend.

Trading resumes on Monday, June 22.

What is closed on Juneteenth?

In addition to the stock market, several other institutions close for the holiday.

Most banks are closed because Juneteenth is recognized by the Federal Reserve as a banking holiday. While physical branches may be shuttered, customers can still access ATMs, mobile banking apps, and online banking services.

The U.S. Postal Service also suspends regular mail delivery, and post offices are closed for the day.

Federal government offices generally close as well.

Private delivery companies such as UPS and FedEx typically continue operating on normal schedules, although customers should check local service availability.

When is the next stock market holiday?

After Juneteenth, the next scheduled market closure is Friday, July 3, when markets will observe Independence Day because July 4 falls on a Saturday this year. Both the NYSE and Nasdaq will be closed for the full day.

10 days the NYSE and Nasdaq close every year

According to the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq holiday calendars, U.S. equity markets observe 10 full-day closures each year. The markets are closed on the following days:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • Washington’s Birthday (aka President’s Day)
  • Good Friday
  • Memorial Day
  • Juneteenth National Independence Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

If you’re looking to buy or sell stocks on Juneteenth, you’ll have to wait until markets reopen Monday morning, June 22, when the NYSE and Nasdaq will resume their regular trading hours of 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST.
