Social landlord, Coastline Housing, recently held a ceremony in Redruth to recognize and celebrate individuals who have made a positive impact in their local communities within Cornwall.
The housing charity’s Customer at the Heart Awards were presented to individuals who were nominated by friends, neighbors, and other community members for their outstanding contributions.
One of the recipients was Seren Blackmore from Padstow, who was awarded the Young Hero Award for her dedication to keeping her neighborhood clean through litter picking. Despite the lack of a litter bin in the communal park near her home, Seren has taken it upon herself to pick up litter and dispose of it properly. She has also shown kindness and support to other children who were being bullied in the park.
Izzy MacQueen, the owner of 7th Rise, an eco-friendly venue on the Fal River, received the Partnership Working Award for her generosity in offering her venue for free to Coastline’s homeless clients. Her efforts have had a significant impact on the well-being and confidence of these individuals.
Hussain Layne, a volunteer at Coastline’s Homeless Service, was recognized with the Your Next Step award for his personal journey and his valuable contributions to the service. He has been instrumental in transforming an overgrown and disused area into a multifunctional activity space, and has also played a key role in establishing a newsletter for the Homeless Service and representing the voices of others in resident groups and focus sessions.
Dermot Dooley from Bodmin was awarded the Green Champion award for his hard work in maintaining the grass and wild hedges in front of his property, creating a safe outdoor space for children to play. He also helps others in his community with their gardens and prioritizes planting for the benefit of wildlife.
Tim Davis from Truro received the Community Volunteer of the Year award for organizing walks to encourage physical activity and appreciation for nature. These walks have become so popular that they now happen weekly, allowing people to explore different areas of Cornwall.
Jeanette Evans from Redruth was recognized with the Miners Minder Award for her love of card games and her willingness to teach others at Coastline’s Miners Court Extra Care scheme. Her weekly sessions have become a popular activity for residents.
Kimberley Croft, who spends his time tending to the garden and growing vegetables for his community, received the Good Neighbour Award for his efforts in keeping his community clean and bringing people together.
A special Long Service Award was also presented to Joe Ferguson from Helston for his long-standing involvement in Coastline’s activities and his dedication to bringing about positive change for his fellow customers.
Chief Executive of Coastline Housing, Allister Young, and retiring Chair, Steve Harrison, presented the awards and expressed their admiration for the recipients. Young stated, “Each and every person nominated deserves true congratulations for the impact they have had on their local community, neighbors, and others. They are an example to us all.”
