Sheffield Chamber Orchestra Appoints Laurence Perkins as New Artistic Director

Sheffield, 3 October 2024 – The Sheffield Chamber Orchestra is pleased to announce the appointment of Laurence Perkins as its new Artistic Director. A highly esteemed bassoonist and conductor, Perkins brings a wealth of experience and a deep passion for classical music to this leadership role.

Perkins is widely recognized for his outstanding career as the principal bassoonist of the Manchester Camerata, as well as for his contributions as a recording artist and music educator. His dedication to British music and his collaborative approach to music-making have earned him a distinguished reputation in the classical music community.

Julie Ryan, Chair of the Orchestra, expressed her excitement for Perkins’ new role, stating, “His extensive experience and artistic vision make him the perfect fit to lead the ensemble in a dynamic and inspiring direction. We are thrilled to welcome Laurence Perkins as our new Artistic Director and are confident in his ability to take the Orchestra to new heights.”

Perkins shared his enthusiasm for his new position, saying, “I have always been enamored with the incredibly wide range of music for chamber orchestra, spanning four centuries. The joy of playing in a smaller orchestra lies in each player’s unique identity and their individual contribution, which leads to vibrant and exciting music-making. I am looking forward to embarking on a musical journey with the talented musicians of the Sheffield Chamber Orchestra and exploring some truly inspiring music.”

Under Perkins’ leadership, the Sheffield Chamber Orchestra is eager to embark on a new journey. The upcoming season will feature a diverse range of programs, showcasing both beloved classics and fresh new works. The season will kick off with a concert on Saturday, November 30th, 2024, at Ecclesall Parish Church. With Perkins at the helm, the Orchestra is committed to continuing its tradition of delivering captivating performances that enrich the cultural landscape of Sheffield and beyond.
